Darlene was a Jacksonville native and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. She married Thomas Toney Sr. in 1966 and the two of them opened Toney's Sandwich Shop in the 1970s. She worked diligently to make the sandwich shop successful and build it into the Jacksonville institution it became. However, her true love was in her cherished role as a devoted housewife and homemaker. She was genuinely happiest when she was surrounded by friends and family, preparing meals and making sure that all stomachs were overly filled. Her warm and giving soul will be deeply missed. Darlene was a devout Catholic and now is at peace in the tender care of our Lord and those who passed before her. Darlene is preceded in death by her devoted husband Thomas Toney Sr., parents Albert and Libbie Abboud and her brother Fred (Sylvia). She is survived by her three sons Thomas Jr (Christina), Richard (Claudia), and Mark (Meagan); brothers Thomas Abboud (Mary), Donald Abboud (Mary), and eight grandchildren- Victoria, Alexander, Nicholas, Henry, Leah, Nicole, Sophia and Saira.

Florence “Flo” Adams Rubel died peacefully the morning of January 7, 2022, at the age of 79. She was surrounded by her devoted family, caring friends and caregivers in the days of her final transition into God’s loving arms.
Flo was born in 1942 in Jacksonville, FL and has lived here most of her life. She was a graduate of Lee High School in Jacksonville and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa from which she received a degree in Education. She taught at Ortega Elementary and loved to recount stories of her young students. Wonderfully creative and imaginative in all she touched, she later lent her talents as an Interior Decorator and Landscape and Floral Consultant. In 1979, she married the love of her life, Tom Rubel. Her interests and gifts were many and she gave herself to others freely. Flo was an avid gardener with an incomparable green thumb, a gifted pianist, and avid tennis player. She was a lifelong active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she cherished her bible studies, weekly lunches and fellowship.
Her greatest joys were her faith, family, friends and caring for anyone in need. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to so many. She loved the simple pleasures of life- galax leaves, a coke over crushed ice, hot French fries, crisp one-dollar bills, green gum drops, the color red, polka dots and Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream on a stick. Most of all she loved doing for others. She had a special way about her and a gift for reaching out in loving kindness to both friends and strangers, especially those in need. She saw only the good in people. Her authentic caring seemed to bring out the best in everyone around her. This was beautifully evident these past few years at her home at The Windsor, where she was known as the Ambassador of Love.
Flo is survived by her sons Richard (Darden) and John Adams (Amy) and by six adoring grandchildren Porter Grant Burgess (Max), Peyton Grant, Clay Grant and Haynes Grant, Sam Grant and Reagan Grant, and her niece Elizabeth “Liza” Barnett Emmet. She is also survived by her special angel on earth Velecia “Peaches” Bellamy. She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years Thomas Jones Rubel, her parents John Reese “Jack” and Betty Adams and her sister Margaret “Maggie” Adams Barnett.
A graveside service of Celebration and Thanksgiving will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, at 4535 N. Main Street, Gate 5 on Saturday, January 15 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a gift in her memory to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 4129 Oxford Avenue, Jacksonville, FL. 32210.

Melvin had a servant’s heart. If he heard of a need and it was within his means, he met that need. He helped neighbors, he helped strangers, he helped family. He was a kind, compassionate, loving man. He put others before himself. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He loved Jerry Ward’s Sunday School Class, where he arrived by 7:30 to get the coffee ready and make sure the chairs were set just right. He loved his family, fishing and Gator & Bolles football. He loved adventures with the grandchildren, which became known as ”Camp Papa.” He loved to cook. He loved time spent at Welaka exploring creeks and rivers with friends and family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Melvin had no enemies. He left a large legacy and many footprints. He will be missed. She wiped many tears, listened to many sad and happy stories, and prayed many prayers with her kids throughout this 31 years. Many of her students would come back year after year, long after they were out of 5th grade, just because they knew she would be willing to stop and listen and help them in any way she could. She bought many Easter dresses, suits, socks and underwear (Everyone needs new underwear she used to tell us), as well as paid for many kids to go to Church Camp who would otherwise never have the opportunity to go. We counted that over her 31 years, she has had over 1300 students come through her classes. She loved Jesus, and her Sunday school ministry was an important part of her life every day, not just on Sunday. Lois has been married to Aubrey for 41 years, and he was the love of her life. She said, God gave Aubrey not only to her, but also to her children. They loved to spend their days just being together, talking and enjoying their retirement. Lois embraced life and loved her family immensely. She had a heart of gold and touched lives on so many levels. Her commitment to Christ and her loving and giving spirit will be her lifelong legacy.

Albert "Pappy" Douglas Brooks (August 1, 1942 - September 24, 2013)
Where do you begin to tell a story about an honest, honorable man that loved to hunt and be outdoors. Most people knew him as “Pappy,” but to Ralph and Dorothy (Edmonds) Brooks, he was Albert Douglas. He was born on August 1, 1942 in Marietta, GA. Growing up, Pappy loved to be challenged. He welcomed criticism of people when they would tell him he could not do something, because he enjoyed the satisfaction in proving the fact that he could do it. Pappy was always honest and would expect it back from his family and friends. Pappy loved his Country and proudly served in the United States Coast Guard. He proceeded to serve as a law enforcement officer in Oakland, California, where he retired as Chief of Police of central California. Upon retirement, Pappy became a rancher and showed cutting horses. He was able to enjoy his retirement in Mexico with the love of his life, Sandy. They met while hunting for doves, and after being set-up on a blind date, they married on June 29, 1974. Together they have shared 39 wonderful years. When Pappy wasn’t raising Labradors, gardening or showing horses, you could find him watching his beloved Florida State Seminoles play football. Pappy was a brother of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the Florida State University where he received his Bachelor Degree. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Criminology. Pappy loved the outdoors. It didn’t matter if he was hunting deer, birds or water skiing barefooted, he loved being out in nature. Pappy passed away on September 24, 2013 at home in Edmond with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife Sandy; daughter, Debbie Metesana and husband David; son, Michael Brooks and wife Shawnna; daughter, Kimberley Hanmer, as well as 6 grandchildren, Vincent, Michelle, Maria, Joey, Debiann and Michael. She finished her nursing career working in an endocrine office in Columbia, Maryland and retired at the age of 62. Larry Evans Fulmer passed away on July 25, 2017 at St. Vincent's Hospital. He was born Aug. 16, 1941 in Miami, Florida. He is predeceased in death by Evans (Sonny) Fulmer, father and Grace Fulmer, mother. He is survived by his sister Janice Wise Springsted (Ron) and Joyce Duarte (Gary) and one nephew and one niece and many great nephews and nieces. Our parents taught us to love and respect nature. Before Larry's accident he always wanted to be outside regardless of what he was doing. His chosen line of work was being a lineman and a trouble shooter for JEA. After retirement from JEA he went to work for Seaward Construction working high lines. Larry had a very dry sense of humor even during the most grim occasions. Years ago, he cut his thumb off with a skill saw while building a picnic table. If anyone remembers the ad campaign It takes two hands to handle a whopper, his concern was that he wouldn't be able to eat a Whopper. While waiting for the surgery to amputate his leg after a high-voltage accident, Larry raised up his head and asked me if the surgical cap made him look funny. If you knew Larry, you just had to love him. He kept everyone laughing regardless of the circumstances. His devotion for animals was undeniable, maybe to a fault. During his life he always had a house full of dogs and cats. He leaves behind his beloved dog, Buster and a cat named Goldie. Many years ago, Larry had a brief and somewhat dismal stint at stock car racing at the now defunct Speedway Park on Jacksonville's westside. Our mother was thrilled when that phase ended and Larry survived with a few crashes and stitches. The list goes on but suffice it to say, It was never dull with Larry in the family. Compassion and kindness were two traits carried throughout his life. He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed greatly.

Beth Ann LeGate Pickels, 81, passed away on June 25, 2024, in Community Hospice at Baptist Medical Center South, after a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. Beth Ann was born on October 9, 1942, in Jacksonville, FL to Frank Milton and Lucille Elizabeth Robinson LeGate. She grew up in Riverside and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1960. She continued her studies at Florida State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts and Science in 1964. She was also quite active as managing editor, academics editor, and co-editor of the Tally-Ho yearbook. After completing her studies at FSU, she completed post graduate studies in Medical Technology at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. There she met Mike, an engineering student at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Beth Ann and Mike married on June 25, 1966, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Jacksonville, FL. She then worked at the Yerkes Primate Center and a doctor’s office while Mike got his degree and embarked on a career with IBM. They settled in the Marietta, GA area and raised an amazing family.
Beth Ann devoted herself to raising her children: a son, Michael Kendall, and three beautiful daughters, Pamela Elaine, Ansley Pace, and Penny Elizabeth. She actively participated in the PTA, led Brownie troops, and tirelessly chauffeured her daughters to piano lessons, dance classes, softball, gymnastics, cheerleading and tennis practices, ensuring she never missed a game, performance, or recital.
Once the kids got well into school, Beth Ann returned to her career as a medical technologist and lab supervisor at SmithKline Beecham. She retired shortly before becoming a grandmother, lovingly called "Gram" by her grandkids. Beth Ann wholeheartedly embraced her role as a grandmother and held her grandchildren dear to her heart. Beth Ann often proudly shared photos of her grandchildren and their achievements with her friends.

Active in her community, she contributed to the Garden Club of Green Cove Springs, supported the Friends of the Green Cove Springs Library, and volunteered at the Senior Center of Clay County. Beth Ann found joy in serving as an election poll worker in Clay County, where she delighted in meeting her neighbors.

Beth Ann remained an integral part of organizing high school reunions, and in March 2024, she greeted her classmates with nametags to celebrate 64 years since graduation. Over the years, she also treasured reunions and gatherings with many of her sorority sisters, cherishing the friendships and bonds of sisterhood they shared.
Beth Ann had a passion to serve the Lord. She was always active in her church community, whether it was as a Greeter, Eucharistic Minister, or Flower Guild member. Beth Ann was deeply devoted to The Order of the Daughters of the King (DOK). She not only served as a member of DOK in various churches but also played a pivotal role in founding chapters at several locations, including Christ the King in Santa Rosa Beach, FL, St. Agatha Episcopal Church in DeFuniak Springs, FL, and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Green Cove Springs, FL.

Kingsley Archibald McCallum, Jr. 81, of Fairhope, AL died peacefully in his home on March 8th, 2024.
Kingsley McCallum was a creative force in the earliest days of the petroleum industry’s evolution to better serve the needs of an expanding fleet fuel network. He was a pioneer in the Fleet Card industry, founding Fuelman in 1984 and serving for many years as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board as the business grew into a nationwide enterprise. The success of Fuelman helped lay the foundation for a host of financial and analytical services previously undiscovered.
In the early 2000’s he founded Automated Fuel Technologies in West Palm Beach, FL, and since 2012 he worked with the Cadence Petroleum Group (formerly Davison Fuels). From David Padgett, SVP - Fuels & Fleet Cards, “Kingsley helped Davison launch our Fuel Master Fleet Card (now CPG Fleet Card) in 2012…He was mine, and many others, mentor in the industry, and he will be greatly missed.”
Away from his professional life, Kingsley loved restoring sports cars, refinishing boats, and taking on mechanical challenges entirely for the pleasure of learning something new. He enjoyed offshore sport fishing with his sons, spending days afield in the duck marshes of Louisiana, and was an active member of the Rex Society in the Carnival circle of New Orleans.
He had the opportunity to travel much of the world as part of his career, but also enjoyed moments of spontaneous adventure. He once flew himself and his wife on a whirlwind trip to Brazil simply because he had always loved the song, “The Girl from Ipanema”, and wanted to see the famous beach with his own eyes. He sought joy in life, and everything he did.
He will always be remembered as a man who embraced the concepts of challenge, risk, and creativity as elements of a successful life, and he leaves behind a legacy of accomplishment and life-long friendships.
He was born in Jacksonville, FL 1942 to Kingsley Archibald McCallum and Mary Clide McCallum. He graduated from Wofford College, then joined the U.S. Marines before embarking into the corporate world.
Kingsley was preceded in death by his father, Kingsley McCallum, mother, Mary Clide McCallum, and granddaughter, Julia McCallum. He was survived by wife, Donna McCallum, son, Kingsley McCallum, III, son, Ryan McCallum, granddaughter, Laura McCallum, granddaughter, Mia McCallum, and grandson, Jocob McCallum.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in the name of his granddaughter Juila McCallum would be greatly appreciated.
Patricia Jean "Patsy" McCarty died unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at her home in Louisville, Kentucky. Born July 13, 1943, in Jacksonville, Florida, Patsy graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville and was a National Merit Scholar, attending both the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History. She remained in Gainesville following graduation, where she raised her family and was employed for many years by the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida College of Medicine, becoming the first editorial assistant in the Research/Editorial Division of the Department in 1973. She spent her career editing the many books and articles generated from the teaching and research by the physicians and staff at the Department and became the manager of the editorial department before her retirement. In 1994, Patsy became a board certified Editor in the Life Sciences (ELS). Her parents, James H. McCarty, Sr. and Helen Prewitt McCarty preceded her in death as did her sister, Kathy [Kathleen McCarty Marsh] after a multi-year battle with cancer. She leaves behind her two children, Amy Cardwell [Holly Harrington] of Hope Valley, Rhode Island and Adam Cardwell [Amanda Clark] and her beloved grandchildren Alexandra and Aidan Cardwell in Louisville, Kentucky. Marsh [Nancy Case] of Phoenix, Arizona, and her nieces and nephews, Kayla McCarty and Danielle Klum of Gainesville, Florida, Justin Klum of Orlando, Florida, Paul Stewart of Durango, Colorado, and Daniel Marsh of Phoenix, Arizona. Patsy loved and will be missed by her maternal aunts in Jacksonville, Florida, Julia Mitchell [John] and Jeanette 'Net' [Russell] Trapp. She is also mourned by her many cousins. Patsy and her sister, Kathy, collaborated for years on assembling the family's history, frequently traveling throughout the United States to visit cemeteries, churches, libraries, and governmental offices searching for records. Patsy and Kathy really enjoyed this extensive project and traveling with each other to gather more information about the family's ancestors. Patsy was active in native Florida plants, wildflowers and book clubs. She enjoyed keying out wildflowers for identification, photographing wildflowers, and editing the monthly newsletter for the Florida Native Plant Society. She was involved in botanizing walks and bird watching through Morningside Nature Center in Gainesville. A Past President and Board Member of Friends of Morningside (now known as Friends of Nature Parks), she worked for many years on activities to support Morningside, including contributions of articles and editorial assistance to the Quarterly Publication of the Friends of Morningside. Patsy also loved animals and seemed to always have furry friends in her family to share her life. She was active in the Unitarian Universalist Church in Gainesville where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Womens' Studies Book Group. Because the family is scattered in so many states, the decision was made to forego a formal memorial service. In lieu of cards the family requests a donation in her name to any organization that cares about Florida's flora and fauna.

Charles Anthony “Tony” Schoder Jr.
June 18, 1942 – May 11, 2024
In the best sense, Tony Schoder was the life of the party.
He’d give a friend – and he had many – the shirt off his back. A master storyteller, his dry wit and “one-liners” were legendary. If you were part of his foursome, you never had a bad round of golf. He was kind, loyal and genuine, and if you were looking for someone with whom to toast the blessings of life (or a good golf score) at day’s end, he was your man.
Charles Anthony Schoder Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away on May 11, 2024. Tony, as everyone knew him, was 81.
The only child of Chuck and Flip Schoder, Tony spent part of his childhood in Cuba and Puerto Rico (his dad was in the U.S. Navy) before moving with his family to Jacksonville for grade school. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School, where he played football and basketball, he attended Stetson University in Deland. The first in his family to attend college, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1964, played basketball with the Hatters and was a Sigma Nu brother. Stetson is also where he met his wife, Donna. The two were married 32 years and blessed with two wonderful daughters.
After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, flying reconnaissance missions. He returned home, earned his law degree from Stetson University College of Law in 1969, settled with his family in Ormond Beach and flourished in his career as a lawyer. He loved his work representing defendants in civil cases, including medical malpractice suits. He shared his wisdom and empathy with clients, searching for a just resolution or, when possible, common ground. No wonder he spent the final years of his career as a mediator.
Tony is survived by the mother of his children, Donna Lee Dericks Schoder; two daughters – Stephanie Lynch of Charlotte, N.C., and Corey Poe and her husband, Charlie, of Tampa; and six grandchildren – Weston Poe, Holland Poe, Wilson Poe, Kathryn Lynch, Avery Lynch, and Hugh Lynch III; and his longtime partner, Dorian Burt. Tony was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Hugh Lynch Jr., of Charlotte.
A gift in Tony’s memory can be made to Stetson University College of Law.
As one of his friends put it, Tony got his money’s worth.
His daughters were his pride and joy. As fun-loving as he was, he was a strict father, insisting they do well in school and work hard in life. He adored his grandkids and was so very proud of all of their accomplishments. He forged close connections at the Ormond Beach Rotary Club, the Quarterback Club and was active in the Volusia County and Florida Bar Associations. He was a fixture at Oceanside Country Club, where he served two terms as President, played golf most weekends (he could crack 80 on his best days), and shared a Dewars or two with his best mates. He laughed easily, including at himself. He loved watching sports and cheered on the University of Florida Gators. He could shag like nobody’s business. Put on the Everly Brothers (his favorite) or Jimmy Buffet and he was a happy man. His palate was simple and yet discerning (how he loved Diet Cokes and Oreos). Whether it was veal parmigiana and garlic bread at Mario’s Restaurant in Ormond Beach or a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup in front of ESPN in his oceanfront condo, he was content.
Anyone who knew Tony Schoder has a story to tell and a memory to cling to. He was, after all, the life of the party.
